Northern Neck Land Conservancy had a great year in 2024 and looks forward to an even better one in 2025. Last year the organization recorded four easements totaling 601 acres. The Land Conservancy is now responsible for stewarding 7,908 acres altogether.

Although the Land Conservancy works in six counties: Essex, King George, Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond and Westmoreland, all of the conservation easements recorded in 2024 were in Northumberland County.

  • Two of the easements, Watts Point Farm and Yeocomico View Farm, were donated by Michael and Christine Downing. Watts Point Farm consists of 351 acres of prime farmland on a plateau outside of Callao. Yeocomico View Farm is 165 acres of prime farmland with wetlands that drain into the Yeocomico River. The Watts Point Farm project was completed in partnership with the US Navy’s Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration, or REPI program.
  • Kennersley 2, donated by Lake Cowart, is now the organization’s smallest easement at 4.25 acres. This waterfront property is adjacent to the Cowart’s larger Kennersley easement in Lottsburg, which includes their home and the Cowart Seafood oyster hatchery.
  • Broadview Farm was donated by Marc Gorelick and Lynn Broaddus. This 80-acre easement is next to property the couples owns that is protected by an easement through the Virginia Outdoors Foundation. This project consists of cropland and a mature forest as well as 1,900 feet of shoreline on Hampton Hall Branch of Yeocomico River.
